Up On The Roof Again…
After a postponement due to a tornado we met on the roof for prayer again last night. Seventeen of us gathered to worship God and continue to seek his direction for our church. Our first rooftop prayer meeting a month ago seemed to have marked the beginning of something God’s doing with us that I guess you could say has energized us. At least over the past couple of months that’s the feeling you get when we’re together.
A change in plans
I had an agenda all set for the evening… sing to God, report in with each other on how things are going, continue to ask God for what we need, and then giving him thanks and going home. But we’re dealing with a living God here and it soon became apparent that he had his own plan for the evening.
We worshiped under a beautiful moonlit sky and began to pray but we never did get to my “to do” list. God took over and started to speak through members of the group as we responded to the question, “What do you think God’s doing?” As each person spoke there was a common theme woven through all that was shared and it became pretty apparent to everybody that this was God speaking to us.
What’s on God’s heart
It seems he has one big thing on his heart that he wants to get through to us in the midst of all this “recalibrating” that’s going on in our church and if we get this right it will be radical and life-changing.
Yes the Lord’s pruning us. Yes he’s calling us to do business a new more open way. But it’s not so that we become a big, successful spiritual enterprise. It’s to get us back to the “first things” – to the basics of intimacy with him. “Love God, your God, with your whole heart: love him with all that’s in you, love him with all you’ve got!” (Deut. 6:5, The Message)
It became clear last night that God was saying he wants us to make him our goal. Make loving God our prize and our passion. Become content in him. Learn that he is enough and whatever fruit this bears should be considered a success. The words that came to mind as I listened were, “Simple devotion… an undivided heart”.
The goal
And as we sat huddled together on the roof singing and sharing in the cool night air it occurred to me that, “this was it!” This is the goal. We don’t have to wait. We were getting a taste of it right there. That whether sitting in a pew listening to beautiful choir in some grand cathedral somewhere or sitting on rattan lawn furniture on a rooftop in Williamsburg; whether we’re a group of seventeen people or seventeen thousand people, all that mattered was God – enjoying his presence, knowing we’re loved and expressing our love in return. And I thought, “This is all I really want”. How about you?
See you Sunday
