A Report On The Rooftop Prayer

Making room

Last night’s rooftop worship and prayer was an announcement of sorts. We were making it official with God and with our congregation that “we’re making room…”

We’re making room for the Spirit to lead us out of the box of “business as usual” and off the map of “we’ve always done it this way”.  We’re making room for God to speak and act among us so we don’t just go to church we become the church- a group of people putting flesh and blood on the saving actions of God in the world…

We’re making room for new blood, new ideas, new contributions. Making room for you – new comers as well as old timers here at the NBV – to answer God’s call in your lives and use your gifts, talents, creative energy that up ‘til now have been bottled up. We’re making room so that the saying, “Everyone gets to play” is more than just a cool slogan we use around here.

Last night was a way of giving permission to anyone willing to commit to our community to go for it. To discover your role, find your place, stake your claim in our mission and make your mark.

It won’t be an every man for himself land grab like the Oklahoma Land Rush of 1889, where everyone does his or her own thing. I see it as a Spirit-led collaboration of folks willing to work as a team to develop a diversity-within-unity, interdependent, missional community. We’ll try to keep it as loose as possible, making changes and adding organization as needed.

A sign

As a sign that God is all for this, he pulled-off a bit of a weather miracle for us last night. No joke, really… Up until we actually gathered up on the roof it had been drizzling enough for us to seriously consider meeting in the Benz’s apartment. But when we decided to take the risk and went to the roof with umbrellas in hand, the rain stopped and actually at one point the evening sky turned a beautiful gray-blue! The moment we finished it started drizzling again and by the time I got in my car it was full on raining. Wow!

Last night just a first step but as they say “the cow is out of the barn”. There’s no stopping now. I’m excited! We’ll be having a follow-up rooftop worship and prayer on September 16th. Get in on it.

See you Sunday,
Mike T
